Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about “minor keys”: the quiet forces that reshape everything without announcing themselves. A mangrove line eaten by salt. A biennale that disappears. A museum partnership that redraws the map of who gets seen. From Southeast
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about the things art asks us to notice when the world is too loud: the small, the daily, the almost-invisible. From Hong Kong’s pause-button in Venice to Yogyakarta’s long game of building a
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about what holds—and what melts. Borders that pretend to be solid. Institutions that decide to move. Bodies that are asked to translate themselves. From here in Southeast Asia, these questions don’t feel theoretical:
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about what survives: a mangrove forest, a family home made of thread, a city’s old depot turned into a new art nerve-center. From Southeast Asia, I watch the art world swing between urgency and
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I felt two opposite forces pulling at art: acceleration and attention. On one side, massive projects—AI hubs, museum expansions, mega-fairs—promising “the future.” On the other, exhibitions that ask me to slow down and actually listen: to
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about navigation—how we map a world that’s already shifting under our feet. From Venice to Taipei, the art I loved most wasn’t “about” geography, it was geography: borders, routes, languages, circulation. Maybe
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I’ve been thinking about what survives—and what gets deliberately erased. Across Asia-Pacific, the art world is obsessing over archives, names, and the politics of visibility. From Seoul’s institutional stewardship to Chinese conceptualists who destroyed their

Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about how images survive us — on temple walls, in museums, in archives, and now inside URLs. From Nara’s Buddhist paintings returning home, to Ryoji Ikeda’s surgical noise, to Saudi Arabia building an ecosystem
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I felt surrounded by images that refuse to stay “just images.” Buddhist painting, pilgrimage sites, and Kusama’s infinity all point to the same pressure point: what survives us. Living in Southeast Asia, I’m constantly reminded that
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about how objects travel—and what they carry with them besides beauty. A temple painting, a piece of cloth, a fair booth, a museum label: each one is a passport, a disguise, sometimes a wound.
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I felt two forces pulling at the same time: the tenderness of belief (real, embodied, risky) and the cold machinery of institutions. In Asia, even a “name” can become a battlefield, and even a “future” can be drafted
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about what survives—and what needs help to survive. A conservator in Hong Kong fighting fungus one trace at a time; a Hong Kong artist building titanium “vessels” that want to outlive him; and a
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about who gets to open the doors: to a biennale, to a museum, to an archive. From Southeast Asia to the Gulf to Japan, the art world is accelerating—building, appointing, announcing. But beneath the
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about how institutions frame what we’re allowed to feel—and what we’re allowed to say. From Seoul’s attempt to pin down “conceptual art,” to Shanghai’s sculptures that drag thought back into
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about what stays when people leave: a coastline, a photograph, a temple path. In Southeast Asia, you learn quickly that landscape isn’t décor—it’s a witness. And in art, the most contemporary gesture
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week, I kept thinking about “training”: the way we’re formed by buildings, images, and the stories power tells us to repeat. From Shanghai’s Youth Palace nostalgia to Sydney’s waterfront monumentality, I felt that familiar pressure: culture
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I kept thinking about crossings: between coasts, between centuries, between what we call “document” and what we feel as truth. From Southeast Asia, the sea is never just scenery—it’s a force that remembers, punishes, carries, and
Contemporary Art — Southeast Asia Vernissage THOMAS Curator · Writer · Visual Artist This week I felt the pull of two forces at once: the sacred that stabilizes us, and the image-machine that distorts us. From Seoul to Hong Kong to Venice (by way of the archive), art kept asking the same question:
